Philip Skippon's Life
- Philip Skippon's date of birth is not recorded but it has been calculated that at Naseby he was probably 45 years of age and so
that gives an approximate date of birth of 1600.
- July 1620. Philip Skippon is with the volunteer expeditionary force to Bohemia, commanded by Sir Horace Vere.
- Skippon was a member of the force holding Frankenthal, withstanding the hardship and dangers of two sieges.
- 4th May 1622. He married Maria Cowes.
- 1623. With the Bohemian cause lost, the expedition left this theatre of war and took up the Dutch cause.
- Skippon set up
house at first in Utrecht. He spent thirteen years fighting for the redemption of the Netherlands against the
Spanish, amongst the foremost soldiers in the world.
- 1625. Skippon is present at the great siege of Breda, holding Captain's rank.
- 1628. Skippon was at Bois-le-Duc.
- 1632. Skippon, as Sergeant Major, distinguished himself by leading many of the sorties at Maastricht.
- 1623. The Skippon's first child Anna is born, she did not live through her first year.
- 1625. The Skippon's second child, also christened Anna, is born.
- 1628. The Skippons moved house to Amersfoot. Here Skippon wrote his little religious books for the private use of his family.
- 1628. William The Skippon's first son is born.
- 1631. Maria The Skippon's third daughter is born.
- 1635. Maria, Skippon's wife returns to England.
- May 1635. Another daughter, Susanna, is born at West Lexham.
- 1638. Skippon's father dies leaving him the Foulsham property and he returned to England after 18 years active service.
- Skippon and his family live at Foulsham Hall.
- 1633. Philip The Skippon's second son is born.
- 1638. The Skippon's seventh child, Luke, is born at Foulsham Hall. Luke is
named after Skippon's own father.
- Philip Skippon inherits another 150 acres when his Uncle William dies.
- 23rd October 1639. Captain Philip Skippon is elected as leader of the Honourable Artillery
Company. He was recommended by His Majesty King Charles I.
- Skippon leaves his old comrade-in-arms from the Old Dutch campaign, Lieutenant John Cruso, as
agent for his interests in Norfolk. The Skippon family move to a house in Hackney, London.
- 1654. Skippon is elected as member of Parliament for King's Lynn.
- 24th January 1655. Maria Skippon, Philip's Wife dies aged 54. She is buried at Acton Church.
- April/May 1655. The Skippon's daughter Susanna marries Richard Meredith.
- 20th February 1660. Philip Skippon made his will.
- March 1660 Philip Skippon died.
